Overview of the Hazardous Waste Recycling Business

Hazardous Waste (HW) is any waste that, because of its physical, reactive, flammable, chemical, toxic, corrosive or explosive properties, harms the environment and health of the human being. All this HW can be treated at the Hazardous Waste Recycling

Business unit. The list of HW is provided in the Hazardous Waste Rules under: -

  • Column 3 of Schedule 1 of the rules
  • Wastes have components listed under Schedule 2 if their concentration is equal to or more than the limit prescribed in the mandated schedule.
  • Waste mandated under lists A and B of Schedule 3 is only applicable in importing or exporting hazardous waste.According to rules 12, 13 and 14, in case they have any hazardous characteristics prescribed under Part B of Schedule 3.

According to the reports published by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of India, our country produces around 51.1 MM tonnes of waste annually.Industries produce around 7.46 MM tonnes of hazardous waste. Among this waste, around 46 per cent of waste, which is 3.41 MM tonnes, is discarded in the landfill, while 9 per cent is incinerated and 45 per cent is recycled. Also, as per reports,Gujrat is the highest producer of hazardous waste, with around 7751 industries generating the waste constituting around 28.76 per cent of waste in India.

With this much waste generation in India, there is an urgent need to set up Hazardous Waste Recycling Business. This is because there is a massive gap between waste generated and the capacity for waste treatment.
