Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) credit is a mechanism through which manufacturers, importers, and brand owners can fulfil their waste management responsibilities. EPR is now a key compliance requirement for plastic waste, e-waste, waste tyres, batteries, used oil, and other notified waste categories in India.
EPR compliance is very important for PIBOs. It is not only a legal obligation but also a part of environmental responsibility. MSTC is a transparent online platform for buying and selling EPR credits. The CPCB portal is a government mechanism where EPR compliance is tracked and verified.
Just buying EPR credit is not enough. Credit must be properly transferred and reflected on the CPCB portal. Only then will it be counted for compliance.
EPR credit is a digital compliance unit created by CPCB-registered recyclers. PIBOs can meet their annual recycling obligation by purchasing this credit. It shows that a certain amount of waste has been recycled.
EPR credit is very important. It helps businesses meet their EPR targets. However, just buying credits from MSTC does not complete compliance. The purchased credits must be transferred to the CPCB portal and shown in your EPR wallet. Only then will it be officially accepted.
Its importance
MSTC and CPCB have different but interrelated roles in EPR compliance. These two platforms work together to make the entire EPR credit system easier and more transparent.
| Portal | Main Purpose | How It Helps |
| MSTC EPRETP Portal | Online marketplace for EPR credit trading | Allows businesses to buy and sell EPR credits from CPCB-authorized recyclers |
| CPCB EPR Portal | Regulatory compliance and credit management | Tracks credit receipt, mapping, utilization, and EPR obligation fulfillment |
Companies buy EPR credits on the MSTC platform. The credit is then transferred to the CPCB portal. Only when the credit is visible on the CPCB portal is it considered in compliance. Businesses must complete MSTC registration on the EPRETP Portal to participate in EPR Carbon trading and manage credit purchase or transfer activities.
Due to the Single Sign-On (SSO) facility, both portals can be accessed using a common login. This makes the work much easier, and data sync is also faster.

Have a look at the things required before EPR credit transfer-
1. Valid CPCB EPR Registration
To transfer EPR credits, first, your CPCB EPR registration must be active. It is important to register in the right category. The company name, GSTIN, PAN, CIN, and authorized signatory information must be updated. Incorrect information may cause problems in the transfer.
2. MSTC EPRETP Registration
A separate account must be opened on the MSTC platform. Then it must be linked to the CPCB account through SSO. Without this link, credit transfer is not possible.
3. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
DSC is very important for safe and valid online transactions. It authenticates your transaction and ensures security in the system.
4. Authorized Recycler Linking
Authorized recyclers need to be linked correctly to the CPCB portal. This makes the credit purchase, verification, and transfer process easy. Incorrect or incomplete linking can create problems in the future.

Step 1: Log in to the MSTC EPRETP Portal
First, visit the MSTC EPRETP portal. Here, you must use the same Single Sign-On (SSO) credentials as in the CPCB portal. After logging in, an OTP will come to your registered mobile number or email. Complete the verification with the OTP. Once the login is successful, you will see your dashboard.
Step 2: Buy Verified EPR Credit
After logging in, go to the Marketplace section. There, you will see a list of CPCB-registered recyclers. Select the waste category as per your requirement, such as plastic, tyre, e-waste, or battery. Then, carefully check the available credit amount, price, and recycler approval status. If everything is fine, purchase the required amount of credit.
Step 3: Verify the purchased credit in the MSTC account
Once the purchase is complete, the EPR credit will be visible in your MSTC account. Now compare the invoice, transaction ID, and credit amount. Make sure that the credit is in the “approved” or “available” status. This verification is very important. If there is a mistake, there may be problems in the transfer in the next step.
Step 4: Start the credit transfer
Now go to the “Transfer Credit” or related option on the MSTC portal. From there, select the correct credit batch. Then enter your CPCB registration number, entity details, and other required information very carefully. Even a small mistake can fail the transfer. Verify all the information and submit the transfer request.
Step 5: Confirm credit receipt on the CPCB portal
After processing the transfer request, log in to the CPCB EPR portal. Go to your EPR Wallet section. You should see the transferred credits there. Check the quantity, waste category, validity period, and batch details of the credit carefully. Usually, the credit is visible on the CPCB portal within 24 to 48 hours of MSTC settlement.
Step 6: Map Credits with EPR Obligations
Go to the Credit Mapping section of the CPCB portal. You will see a list of your available credits. Allocate credits against the specific compliance year as required. It is very important to select the correct waste category. Mapping the wrong category can lead to compliance issues. Once the mapping is complete, your EPR obligation will be reduced accordingly.
Step 7: Use Credits for Compliance Filing
The mapped credits are used during annual return filing and compliance reporting. Before submitting the return on the CPCB portal, ensure that the correct amount of credit has been applied. Then download and save the compliance confirmation. These documents are very useful during future audits, inspections, or regulatory reviews.
Some common issues may arise during EPR credit transfer. However, these can be easily avoided if you are careful beforehand.
The transfer may fail if the CPCB registration number is entered incorrectly.
If the information on the MSTC and CPCB portals does not match, the system may not accept the credit.
It usually takes 24–48 hours. So, you need to wait a little while.
If you select the wrong compliance year or waste category, the credit will not be used correctly.
If the authorized recycler is not linked correctly, the transaction may be blocked.
What to do to avoid these errors
Some important rules should always be kept in mind while managing EPR credits.
EPR credit is valid for 2 years after the end of the financial year of generation.
If not used within the stipulated time, they are automatically cancelled.
EPR credits can be traded only through MSTC EPRETP and CPCB-registered platforms.
Incorrect information may result in the cancellation of credits.
Generating more credits than actual recycling may result in legal action.
It can include fines, authorization suspension, and even registration cancellation.
If the EPR credit is not transferred correctly, the entire compliance may remain incomplete. It is seen that the company has purchased credit, but it is not visible on the CPCB portal. Then problems arise.
If the credit is not shown on the CPCB portal, it is not considered compliant.
An incorrect transfer can show shortages in the system.
Regulatory issues are reduced if transferred correctly.
All data is clearly visible on the CPCB portal.
The risk of your license or registration being closed is low with proper compliance.

EPR credit is digital proof. It shows that a certain amount of waste has been recycled. CPCB-registered recyclers generate these credits. Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) meet their EPR targets by purchasing these credits. So, it is a unit of account for your compliance.
Compliance is not complete just by purchasing credits from MSTC. Credit must be transferred to the CPCB portal and shown in your EPR wallet. The system will not consider it. Many times, companies think they are compliant, but nothing is seen in CPCB.
Generally, the credit appears on the CPCB portal within 24 to 48 hours after the transaction is completed in MSTC. However, sometimes there may be a slight delay, especially if the system is loaded. So, it is better not to panic right away. If it does not appear after waiting for 2 days, you should contact MSTC or CPCB for support.
Yes, EPR credit has a specific validity period. It is usually valid for 2 years from the end of the financial year. If it is not used within this period, the credit is automatically cancelled. So, it is better to do mapping and usage on time without delay.
First, check whether the transaction has been completed in MSTC. Then wait for 24–48 hours. If it still does not appear, log in to the CPCB portal and check the EPR wallet again. If everything is fine, contact MSTC support or the CPCB helpdesk. Sometimes there can be a delay, even due to a small data mismatch.
Yes, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is required. It secures and authenticates your online transaction. Some important work cannot be done without a DSC. So, it is better to register a DSC in advance. This will reduce problems in the future.
No, it is not possible. EPR credit has to be used according to the specific waste category. For example, plastic credit cannot be used for tyres or e-waste. Mapping the wrong category can make it invalid. So, you have to be very careful and select the category.
If the CPCB registration number or other information is given incorrectly, then the transfer can be rejected. Sometimes the credit can go to the wrong account. Then it becomes a little difficult to fix it. So, it is very important to double-check while entering data.
The best way is to buy credit on the MSTC platform from CPCB-authorized recyclers. Also, GST-linked invoice, recycler approval status, and transaction details should be verified thoroughly. Only if the credit reflects on the CPCB portal is it considered genuine.
